10 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m. Start at DIRECTOR PARK Our downtown Portland, Oregon tours are engaging, well-paced and colorful: the Best of the City! It’s a weird city, but there are stories in every building, park and brick. We’ve organized our city’s best things -- and of course, its most complicated and conflicted, as well. In an ever-changing world we continuously change the story of the city. Much of Portland’s history can be told through the buildings and street layouts including the prioritization of parks in the city center. It’s not a dry history: full of back-room deals, early deaths and greed; and then there were hippies! How did Portland become the 1st city on the West Coast with a fine art museum? How did the city's early cultural reputation influence its mid-20th century; and how did it become such a lightning rod for racial justice protests? We'll discuss what was, is, and will be the soul of the city. We keep groups to no more than 15 for personalization and safety.

In this Portland food tour, we will explore the charming streets of the Kerns neighborhood where we will sample some of the tastiest bites that Portland has to offer. This once sleepy neighborhood has blossomed into a Portland bazaar for diverse and delicious treats. Our five stops will create a varied and scrumptious meal and whet your appetite for what the Kerns has to offer. Examples include ethnic contributions such as Jaliscan and Bretagne food, a visit to an eclectic outdoor food hall, charcuterie, and dessert from an artisanal ice cream shop.. You will not leave hungry! While the Kerns extends more broadly, its core is centered on Restaurant Row, on NE 28th between Burnside and Glisan St. We will walk a total of 1.3 miles through tree lined streets and hipster hangouts while we visit six foodie hot spots in the Kerns neighborhood. Along the way we will also talk about the history of the Kerns and take in some classical Portland residential architecture. All ages welcome.

Forest Park Urban Hiking Tour, Portland
Forest Park Urban Hiking Tour, Portland

When tour guests asks us, "what one thing should I not miss in Portland," we pick the 4.5- to 5-mile (8-9 km) hike in Forest Park. No matter what the season, hiking in the park is entering another world right on the borders (and through the fabric) of the city. We offer two daily departures, both with varied terrain and about 900 ft elevation gain. The morning hike is focused around a classic Northwest Portland experience, and ends at the International Rose Test Garden, the Forest Park Experience (9 a.m. to noon). The afternoon hike starts at Goose Hollow, weaves through the neighborhoods and up into the park, the Goose Hollow to the Forest (1:30 to 5 p.m.). Both pass iconic spots; Japanese Garden, Pittock Mansion, and Witch's Castle; but take a different approach to the forest. Being in Forest Park is to be immersed a fluid place that exists both in and out of time. In the forest—within minutes leaving the street—you can forget, or wonder at the fact that you are still in a city.
