The name of the lake in Tajikistan comes from the name "Iskander" (meaning "Alexander") and the word "kul" (translated as "lake"). Some legends say that the reservoir got its name since the Great Alexander visited it during a campaign to India from Central Asia. The lake, located in the amazingly beautiful Fan Mountains, has a rather rich and long history. It is believed that it was named in honor of the commander the Great Alexander, whom the locals called Iskander Zulqarnain. Iskanderkul, considered the heart of the Fan Mountains, is surrounded by several peaks- five thousand meters – Bodhona, Chapdara, Maria, Mirali, Zindon. The highest is Chimtarga (5,487 meters). The nearby 43-meter waterfall is called "Fan Niagara". It is located on the river flowing out of the lake. There is also a rock with an inscription dating back to 1870, it was left by the participants of the expedition led by the famous Russian traveler and scientist A. Fedchenko.

The Hissar Fortress, one of the most famous historical monuments of Tajikistan. The fortress was built about 3000 years ago, during the heyday, when the routes of the Great Silk Road passed near Hissar. The Hissar Fortress is one of the oldest and largest architectural monuments of Central Asia. Now it is an open-air museum with an area of 86 hectares, located on the site of an ancient settlement. It is located 30 km from the capital of Tajikistan. For a long time, the Hissar fortress served as the residence of the governor of the Emir of Bukhara. To date, only two cylindrical towers and structures around the main gate, forming a pointed arch and built on the instructions of the emir of Bukhara in the XVI century. There are legends about the Hissar Fortress, which have accumulated a lot over several millennia of known history. According to one, Afrosiyob built the citadel to protect himself from Rustam. They are both famous heroic characters of Firdousi's famous epic poem "Shahnameh".

CHILDUHTARON is an ancient place, a valley in the South of Tajikistan, big rocky mountain silhouettes in the form of forty girls. Childukhtaron is translated as the valley of the Forty Girls, which is associated with an interesting legend. According to this legend, 40 stone blocks towering over the valley were once beautiful and charming girls. When enemies came to the valley and decided to make them their concubines, the inhabitants of the mountains prayed and asked Allah to turn themselves into silent stones. Among the locals there is also another legend, according to which the rocks grew on this place after a fierce battle with Genghis Khan. Defending their land, 40 young horsewomen blocked the path of Genghis Khan himself. But the forces were unequal and the riders died in battle. Iskanderkul is a mountain lake of glacial origin in Tajikistan's Sughd Province. It lies at an altitude of 2,195 metres on the northern slopes of the Gissar Range in the Fann Mountains. 134 km from Dushanbe and 23 km from the Dushanbe—Khujand road, Iskanderkul is a popular tourist destination. The lake takes its name from Alexander the Great's passage in Tajikistan: Iskander is the Persian pronunciation of Alexander, and kul means lake in many Turkic languages. There are two legends connecting the lake to Alexander. The first one states it used to be a location the inhabitants of which resisted Alexander's rule, and in fury, the king ordered to divert a river and annihilate them. Not far (60 km) from the capital of Tajikistan – Dushanbe is located the historical and natural Park Shirkent, which is famous for its prehistoric attractions - dinosaur tracks. Shirkent is mainly known for fossilized dinosaur footprints. The animal that left these prints is attributed to a new genus and species Macropodasaurusgravis, there are still no analogues of these five-toed dinosaur footprints in the world. In total, eight locations of dinosaur footprints have been registered in our republic. Three of them are located in the mountains of the Shirkent River gorge. The monument of inanimate nature unites about 50 unique objects as: geological, hydrological, glaciological. The most significant in this series are three different age locations of dinosaur footprints, with the total number of footprints of extinct lizards more than 400. For tourists, there is a wide choice of routes for every taste, and mountain climbers expect snow-capped peaks that keep their inviolability.

Mountain sea can be with great pleasure so called Nurek reservoir, formed in 1972. Indeed, among the mountain range in the South of Tajikistan, noticing the huge area of the water surface, it is impossible not to compare it with the sea, especially the mountain. The surface area is 98 km2, water volume is 10.5 km3, length — 70 km, width 1 km, the Average depth of the lake is 107 m. the reservoir Level is in the range of 53 m. the reservoir is used for shipping. Discharge of water through the tunnel made in the rock with a length of 5 km. The mountain sea is filled with clear, mirror fresh water, the source of which is the icy mountains of the Pamir range. The reservoir was formed at an altitude of 885 meters above sea level under the Nurek dam. Currently, one of the most powerful hydroelectric power plants in Central Asia, the dam which is listed in the Guinness book of Records as the highest bulk dam in the world. The height of the Nurek hydroelectric dam is 304 meters.

In the northwestern corner of Tajikistan, along the border with Uzbekistan, lay the rugged and beautiful Fann Mountains, a branch of the Western Pamir-Alay Range. They divide the northern territory of the country, in the Fergana Valley, from Dushanbe and the south. It is a compact range, with around 100 stunning peaks, many over 5,000m, and renowned alpine lakes. Famed among nature lovers and mountaineers, these mountains nonetheless see very few visitors, and their natural beauty and cultural treasures have remained virtually unchanged to this day. The Fann Mountains nine peaks exceeding 5,000 m above sea level. The highest point of the region is Chimtarga Peak (5,489 m). Other 5,000-metre mountains are Big Hansa (5,306 m), Bodkhona (5,138), Mirali (5,132), Chapdara (5,050), Energia (5,120), Zamok (‘Castle’) (5,070), Little Hansa (5,031) and Moscow (5,046).

CHILUCHORCHASHMA The name of this place translates as "Forty-four springs". Every resident of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan knows about it. Here, near the hill, in the very center of the sunny desert, several wide springs burst out of the ground, spreading into 39 smaller ones. All the springs, connecting into one, form a small river, the width of which is 12-13 meters. There are a lot of fish here. There is a legend that Caliph Ali, noticing a dried-upriver called Romit, drove to Chiluchorchashma and began to pray to Allah that he would give at least a little water. At this time, he hit the ground near the hill, and in the place where his hand touched the soil, several transparent springs appeared. Chiluchorchashma is visited annually by many tourists and pilgrims. People pray, perform ablutions, plunge into springs, make sacrifices. There is an opinion that the water in these springs can heal from diseases.

The Navruz Holiday is one of the greatest national holidays of Persian nations, including Tajiks. During Navruz days Tajiks arranged various games: wrestling, poiga – horses race, buzkashi - fight on houses for taking the goat carcass, the fights of animals - hurusjang -cockfight, budanajang-quail, fight, sagchangak - dogs fight and other games. In Ishkashim and Vahan young men played polo, in the plains they organized running in sacks. In February 2010 the 64 session of UN General Assembly declared 21 March as "International day of Navruz".

The Wakhan valley is located between in south-west of Tajikistan in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province and north-east of Afghanistan. It contains the headwaters of the Amu Darya River, and was an ancient corridor for travelers from the Tarim Basin to Badakshan. An 1873 agreement between UK and Russia split the Wakhan by delimiting spheres of influence for the two countries at the Pyanj and Pamir rivers, and an agreement between Britain and Afghanistan in 1893 confirmed the new border. The Wakhan is connected to Tashkurgan Tajik County, China, by a long, narrow strip called the Wakhan Corridor, which separates the Gorno-Badakhshan region of Tajikistan from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan. Historically the Wakhan has been an important region for thousands of years as it is where the Western and Eastern portions of Central Asia meet.
